How to Compare P2P Platforms: A Framework
A neutral checklist for evaluating peer-to-peer platforms on the criteria that matter — without relying on marketing claims or unverified performance figures.
Why a Framework, Not a Ranking
Platform performance figures change constantly and are easy to present selectively. Rather than rank specific platforms with numbers that may be outdated or unverifiable, this guide gives you a repeatable checklist so you can evaluate any platform yourself against the criteria that matter. For a list of the regulated platforms in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand, see our P2P Platform Directory at https://p2pfinanceasia.com/platforms.
1. Regulatory Standing
- Is the operator registered with the Securities Commission Malaysia as a Recognised Market Operator (RMO)? This is the baseline — verify it on the SC's own register (the "Digital Initiatives" page), not the platform's own claim. Outside Malaysia, check the equivalent regulator: MAS in Singapore, OJK in Indonesia, the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Thailand in Thailand.
- Are investor and issuer monies held in a third-party trust account, as the SC framework requires?
2. Transparency
- Does the platform publish historical default and late-payment rates, and explain how it calculates them?
- Are fees (to investors and to issuers) clearly disclosed?
- How much issuer information is provided before you invest?
3. Track Record and Scale
- How long has the platform operated, and through what economic conditions?
- What is the breadth of issuers and notes — enough to diversify meaningfully?
4. Product Mechanics
- Minimum investment per note and overall.
- Tenures offered and how they fit your time horizon.
- Is there a secondary market for early exit, and how liquid is it in practice? Is there a voluntary cooling-off period (the SC does not require one)?
- Are there auto-invest / auto-diversify tools, and how transparent are their rules?
5. Borrower Quality and Process
- How rigorous is credit assessment and what data is used?
- What is the collections and recovery process when a borrower is late or defaults?
6. Service and Support
- Quality of reporting and statements for tax and record-keeping.
- Responsiveness of customer support and clarity of documentation.
Using the Checklist
Score each platform on the criteria above using its own published disclosures and independent verification (especially regulatory status). Treat marketing headlines and advertised returns with healthy scepticism, and weight transparency and regulatory standing most heavily.
